Monday 5 February: Back in Akaroa

The coach driver dropped us off on the edge of Akaroa so that we could amble along the main street back to the tender boarding area and then on to the old lighthouse.

There's a little bit of France here in New Zealand. In 1840 some French settlers arrived to try to establish New Zealand as a French possession. What they didn't know was that on Waitangi Day the previous February the British Crown had already signed up the Maoris to the Treaty of Waitangi, so they'd missed the boat!

Like a scene out of 'Death  Paradise'!
