Thursday 8 February: Tauranga - Docking in Tauranga

Docking in Tauranga is a tricky business.  There are two harbour entrances but each one is narrow and millions of cubic metres or sea water come in and out with every tide.

This means that the currents can get fierce and so the port authorities won't allow large ships to arrive or leave unless the current is 1 knot or less!

This whole area is very volcanic and this is an old volcanic plug

Can you see how narrow the entrance is between the green and red buoys near the top right of the photo?

Notice how near the sand bar is to the main shipping channel

We had booked a private excursion which was less than half the cost of the ones on the ship and actually did what we wanted.

We were a party of 11 in a lovely mini bus and set off on the 1 hour drive to Rotorua.
