Sunday 4 February: Cricket and Signal Hill

Once ashore, our hosts for the day, Sheryl and Jim met us outside the terminal building and whisked us off for a full day's touring in and around Dunedin.

We'd met them on  previous cruise when we'd been on Cunard's Queen Victoria on the Mediterranean in October 2016 and they'd kindly offered to show us round their town.

Dunedin lies within the larger region of Otago, so many names locally feature Otago rather than just Dunedin

Our first stops on the tour were in Otago University's sports area of Dunedin.  Otago University has been developing as New Zealand's version of our Loughborough and has been increasing its profile in the sports science field.

We visited the University Oval where England will play New Zealand in an ODI in March as part of their New Zealand cricket tour.  From there we went to Signal Hill for superb views over Dunedin and the surrounding area.  There are a number of Signal Hills in the Antipodes, all stemming from their historical function as signal stations for shipping in the early days of their development.

Dunedin has strong historical links with Edinburgh

Mount Cargill, the highest point around Dunedin. It houses a broadcasting mast and is named after Captain William Cargill, an early leader in the province of Otago
