Sunday 4 February: Dunedin - Central Dunedin

We then walked through Dunedin and Jim pointed out various places of interest. There was also a bit of shopping to be had along the way ....

On the left is the police station where Jim worked for many years and on the right are the Law Courts where Jim and Sheryl first met

The Queen and Prince Philip stayed in this hotel when on their Commonwealth Tour of 1953-1954 and the Queen appeared on the balcony on the right for the crowds below to see her

The building on the left is the scene of a famous unsolved murder in Dunedin. In February 1962, a well-known barrister called James Ward was killed by a parcel bomb. Nobody was ever charged

Like many regional theatres, the Regent struggles to stay afloat, but each year they hold a grand book sale and raise £30,000 to £40,000

This is the back of the local council's premises.  Once when the Queen and Prince Philip visited Dunedin, Jim was responsible for their security. At one point he was alone in a room with the two of them, but wasn't allowed to engage them in conversation!

I always worry that I'll come across exotic wildlife in foreign climes!

There are ambitious plans to build a headland in the centre of Dunedin and establish a complex along the lines of the Sydney Opera House development in Sydney

Jim and Sheryl then took us to their house for a very welcome lunch break.  It was at this point that Jim confessed he'd had an honour from the Queen!
