Saturday 3 February: Thompson Sound and Doubtful Sound

Further south down the coast is Thompson Sound.  This is a ‘runaround’ route into Doubtful Sound and out once again to sea.

Inside the sound we met Diamond Princess going the other way.  Thompson Sound in New Zealand is one of the sounds that form the coast of Fiordland.

The sound is 21 kilometres in length.   Thompson Sound was named by John Grono, a sealer who worked the Fiordland coast in the early 19th century, after his boat's owner, Andrew Thompson.

Doubtful Sound was named 'Doubtful Harbour' in 1770 by Captain Cook, who did not enter the inlet as he was uncertain whether it was navigable under sail.  It was later renamed Doubtful Sound by whalers and sealers, although it is not technically a sound but a fiord.
